Ex-policeman and rare books dealer Cliff Janeway travels to remote Paradise, Colorado, where cops and crooks alike are as infernal as the weather. Cliff is excited when he buys a signed first edition of a travelogue written by world famous explorer Richard Burton. Soon, he is confronted by a woman on her deathbed who claims that the book rightfully belongs to her and is part of a much larger library stolen years ago.
